Prunus spinosa, better known as Blackthorn, is a native hedge traditionally planted to define boundaries. Dense and thorny by nature, blackthorn hedging has been used for centuries to mark edges, keep things in their place and quietly discourage wandering where it’s not invited.

Blackthorn hedge plants establish reliably and grow into a thick, defensive boundary well suited to rural gardens, field edges and long stretches of perimeter planting. Spring arrives with a cloud of white blossom before the leaves appear, followed by dense summer growth and dark sloes in autumn. Hardy, resilient and thoroughly traditional, a blackthorn hedge is not ornamental in the modern sense, but it is deeply handsome in its own, quietly authoritative way.

How will my hedge arrive?

All our Hedging is supplied with a rootball wrapped in hessian as standard. Container grown options are also available out of season or upon request. We'll be happy to discuss the best format for your needs before finalising your order.

Growing & Care

Blackthorn hedging is remarkably unfussy and grows well in most soils, including poorer or heavier ground. It’s fully hardy and copes comfortably with exposed conditions, wind and cold; the sort of hedge that doesn’t expect coddling. Plant in full sun or partial shade and water during establishment to help roots settle in properly. Once established, blackthorn largely looks after itself, responding well to occasional trimming to keep growth dense and manageable.

Common Uses

Blackthorn is traditionally used for boundary hedging, field edges and defensive planting where privacy, shelter and durability matter more than polish. Its thorny habit makes it particularly effective for deterrent hedging, while its dense growth provides excellent cover for wildlife. It’s a natural choice for rural gardens, larger plots and landscapes that favour authenticity over ornament.

Did you know?

Blackthorn produces sloes, the small dark fruits traditionally used to make sloe gin. While the hedge itself takes a hard line, it does at least offer something sociable in return.

FAQs

Hedges can be particular creatures. If yours is behaving oddly - or you are - we're always happy to advise. The answer may be waiting below.

How fast does a blackthorn hedge grow? +

Blackthorn grows at a steady, determined pace rather than racing ahead. With regular trimming, it gradually thickens into a dense, thorny hedge that looks properly established, not hurried.

When should you plant a blackthorn hedge? +

Blackthorn hedge plants are best planted during the dormant season, from late autumn to early spring. This gives the roots time to settle before spring growth begins.

When should a blackthorn hedge be trimmed? +

Blackthorn is usually trimmed in late summer, once the main growing season has finished. Regular cutting encourages dense growth, but it’s best to avoid heavy trimming during bird nesting season.

Is blackthorn good for security or boundary hedging? +

Very much so. With its dense growth and formidable thorns, blackthorn makes an excellent defensive hedge. It’s often chosen where boundaries need to be clearly defined, and gently enforced.
